Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge is currently the largest football stadium in London and one of the best in Europe so, when it came to planning a refurbishment, exclusivity, quality and style were the prerequisites which led to over 3,000m² of InterfaceFLOR carpet tiles being installed in the East and South Stands.

Chelsea FC - Wabi Stripe, Tatami, Scandinavian collection

Wabi Stripe was the product specified by AFL Architects for the executive boxes and suites in the East Stand, with colours Steel and River being chosen. Wabi Stripe, available in eight colourways, is designed for quarter-turn installation and is a microtuft plain level loop pile, made from recycled solution-dyed nylon.

For the South Stand the contractor, CWC Flooring, put forward several options to the Chelsea executive and eventually InterfaceFLOR’s Tatami Kobe and Tatami Osaka were selected – 250m² of Tatami had previously been laid in the press lounges in the East Stand. In the common areas and corridors outside the office of Chelsea FC owner, Roman Abramovich, Copenhagen tiles from the Scandinavian collection were laid whereas, in the office of chief executive Peter Kenyon, Tatami Kobe was laid with Tatami Osaka acting as a border. In all other areas Tatami Kobe was laid on its own.

One of InterfaceFLOR’s best-sellers, Tatami is available in 24 colourways and is designed for quarter-turn installation. It is a tufted patterned structured loop pile carpet tile, with a Graphlex® backing. The pile material is 100% Antron Excel SC solution-dyed nylon. Tatami’s basketweave design is undemanding, relying largely on subtle variations in texture to relieve large areas of colour.

Andrew Baker, commercial sales manager of CWC Flooring, comments: “Quality, after-sales service and support single InterfaceFLOR out. In addition, the ranges on offer mean there is a product to suit all types of installation, and the extensive selection of colourways allows the majority of interior design themes to be achieved.”
