The discipline
The sport decides the floor.
EN 14904 is the standard for indoor sports surfaces, and it measures a floor on what the game asks of it: shock absorption, ball bounce, slip resistance and the load it takes when it is rolled on.
What sits below matters as much. A hall over occupied rooms takes an acoustic underlay, and any sports floor is only as flat as the subfloor it is laid on, which is checked before anything is ordered.
